Does anyone know anything about dental implants?

Does anyone know anything about dental implants?

Since I have no back teeth, & can chew with only one spot in my mouth, the dentist has suggested dental implants. This is a VA dentist, & they aren’t renowned for their compassion. How painful is it? He says it will relieve my TMJ symptoms. Is this right? My jaw is out of alignment. Will it help? Thank you in enhancement for the input! By the way, when I said VA, I meant Veterans Handing out, not Virginia. Thanks!

My husband recently had his whole mouth done (he was given medication as a boy that made his teeth brittle and they all broke – he is only 36yrs).
It was very painful and you will definately need time off work and someone at home to care for you. He was taking lots of pain killers for numerous days after each part of the work was done. He said the worse were the front teeth and thats everywhere most of his swelling was (so you possibly ok with it being back teeth)

He looks absolutely brillant now and I am sooo proud of him – they look natural.

Dental Implants are excellent. Its has to be done by a surgeon so that mean it can be very expensive. Your only other option would be to get a partial. Its less expensive and less painful, but you will have fake teeth in the back, that are removable so its like having a denture. If you have a conundrum with that get the implants. Also, it depends on your age. If you are over 50, I would not suggest getting implants because when you reach a certain age you may need dentures anyway.

you will doubtless need to stay in the hospital for a week after you have the procedure…it is painful because they are putting teeth in your mouth with screws…but it’s not painful once you have healed and it will right any problems you have been having as you are now…you will certainly feel much better once you have healed…so get it done as soon as possible so you can start feeling better soon…

Implants are a wonderful way to replace gone teeth. An oral surgeon will be the one that seats the implant in your jaw bone and once that has healed properly then you will see your general dentist to have the crown attached to the implant. I have done alot of implants and all of my patients say that it was not very painful to have the surgery. They said that it felt like they had a tooth extracted. You will have fantastic results with the implants and you should do it. It is expensive but it is well worth the money.

I reckon the suggestion for implants is a excellent one.

Yes, it will help relieve some TMJ symptoms simply by charitable you posterior teeth to re-open your bite. Gone teeth can be very stressful to the joint. The bite closes deeply causing malalignment and disc distress.

I have personally helped many implant placement surgeries, the patients say it is less painful than having a tooth extracted and seem to do very well and heal quickly.

As far as VA dentists are concerned, I have heard horror tales–but I have heard the same concerning dentists that are not VA. Trust your instincts. If you do not like the chairside style of the dentist go to a different one. There has to be more than one VA dentist available to you.

Excellent luck!

If you have personal experience, I´d like to question about what are the small hidden (eventual) problems that can go together with implants (that the surgeons will not talk about), as well as the beneficial side of it.

About the costs I am already informed well.
Thank you
Very nice answers; really appreciate them all.
Thank you.

Having a Dental Implant will make it simpler to chew, maintain right pacing between your teeth and of course make your smile more striking. The alternative might be a dental bridge which would affect three teeth.

More on the costs, some Dentsist do provide Discounts on this and other dental work. For a list see below.

i am really getting 9 implants. the implants will look more natural than dentures and once they are in you don’t really have to worry about them they are like normal teeth. you can eat apples and corn on the cob. they are more like real teeth then dentures. sometimes they can’t fit all the implants in that you need and will need to make a bridge for two teeth. you may need to get a bone graft to have enough bone to get the implants. i estimate there is the chance you body will reject them but that hasn’t happened to me. excellent luck.

Hi – Although I am a dental professional, I feel that I can still give you an honest answer to your question, which is something you should deserve as a patient, no matter what. Let me start by telltale you the disadvantages: The major one is the cost. Dental implants are doubtless the most expensive dental procedures we have. When compared to a 3-unit bridge, the initial cost is definately higher. I want to stress the “initial” cost though, because bridges will always have a finite life span. The average bridge lasts between 8 – 10 year, according to publications from the American Academy of Prosthodontics. The certainty is we don’t really know how long implants will last, because we only have 40 being worth of data, though the ones which were placed 40 being ago are still in excellent function. Therefore, the long-term economics really are better with the dental implant. Dental implants take longer to complete. If there is no grafting necessary, it may take up to 8 months before you have your final tooth on the implant (you can doubtless have a fleeting tooth much sooner though). There is a surgery involved. The simple placement of a dental implant is usually a very benign surgery with very small discomfort, though, if any grafting needs to be done ahead of time or at the time of the placement, this can produce more post-machinist discomfort.

Now for the excellent news: They last longer, they have a much higher success rate than bridges, they will maintain bone and gum tissue better and therefore maintain better long-term esthetics (bridges don’t do that too well over long periods of time), and finallly and doubtless most importantly, they don’t require the adjacent teeth to be cut down.
