I have had two bridges which were fine for many years. I now have an establish but must admit was far more pleased when I had the bridging it certainly felt better.

Since the tooth has been missing for such a long time, why bother to have a temporary solution done? Bridges are stable restorations and not temporary so that is not really an option to consider. If you are plotting on an establish, then just place everything the way it is until you can have it done. The only conundrum with coming up too long is the amount of bone you may lose and you may need to have the bone built up. Areas of the jaw where there are missing teeth tend to lose bone (aka resorption) and the area may not have sufficient bulk for an establish to take hold. The only additional options are a join, which would require removal of the crown and veneer, and a partial denture.
